SIMPLE WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH.

Jenna Offerdahl

In today’s fast-paced world, taking care of our health can often feel overwhelming. We’re constantly bombarded with new diets, trends, and lifestyle changes, but at its core, wellness isn’t about fads – it’s about balance and consistency. Here’s a guide to taking care of your health from all angles, so you can feel your best every day.

1. Get Daily Sunshine

A little sunshine goes a long way. Exposure to sunlight helps your body produce vitamin D, essential for bone health, mood regulation, and immune function. Aim for at least 15–30 minutes of sunlight every day, preferably in the morning when UV levels are lower. Not only does it give you that vitamin D boost, but being outdoors can also uplift your mood and reduce feelings of stress.

2. Eat Enough Protein

Protein is the building block of life. Whether you’re an athlete, a busy professional, or a parent on the go, protein supports muscle repair, energy, and overall body function. Aim to get a balanced amount of high-quality protein from lean meats, fish, eggs, and dairy. Prioritizing protein helps stabilize your blood sugar, keeps you fuller for longer, and promotes overall health.

3. Avoid Processed and Junk Foods

Our modern diet is often packed with processed foods that are loaded with sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. While convenient, these foods can lead to weight gain, inflammation, and a host of chronic health problems. Focus on whole, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Your body will thank you for the fresh, clean fuel.

4. Limit or Cut Out Alcohol

While the occasional drink might be enjoyable, it’s important to be mindful of alcohol consumption. Excessive drinking can lead to liver damage, disrupt sleep, and increase stress. Consider cutting back or replacing alcohol with healthier alternatives like herbal teas, sparkling water with fresh fruit, or kombucha. If you do drink, aim to keep it moderate – one drink per day for women and two for men.

5. Move Your Body Every Day

Exercise is a cornerstone of health. You don’t have to hit the gym for hours to reap the benefits. Even a 30-minute walk, some bodyweight exercises, or a yoga session can improve your mood, enhance cardiovascular health, and boost energy levels. Find an activity you love and stick with it. Consistency is key, whether it's CrossFit, cycling, swimming, or even a casual stroll.

6. Take Regular Breaks from Screens

Our lives are increasingly dominated by screens – whether it’s for work, entertainment, or socializing. But prolonged screen time can lead to eye strain, headaches, and mental fatigue. Make it a point to take regular breaks throughout the day. The 20-20-20 rule is a great habit: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. These mini-breaks help prevent burnout and keep your focus sharp.

7. Manage Stress

Chronic stress is one of the biggest contributors to poor health. It can lead to issues like high blood pressure, anxiety, and even a weakened immune system. Find healthy outlets for stress relief, whether it’s meditation, deep breathing exercises, journaling, or spending time with loved ones. Incorporating stress-relieving activities into your daily routine will help you maintain mental clarity and emotional balance.

8. Prioritize Sleep Hygiene

A good night’s sleep is essential for physical and mental recovery. Aim for at least 8 hours of sleep each night and establish a calming bedtime routine to help signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. Limit screen time before bed, avoid caffeine late in the day, and create a dark, quiet environment in your bedroom. Quality sleep is non-negotiable for optimal health and wellness.

Taking care of your health is a lifelong journey that involves more than just just one thing. Being healthy is an accumulation of many things, it's a way of life and a mindset, it’s about creating a sustainable, balanced approach that fits your lifestyle. By addressing all angles of your health—physical, mental, and emotional—you’ll build a foundation that keeps you strong, vibrant, and thriving.
