Getting Up From the Floor: A Skill Worth Practicing in CrossFit for Seniors in Austin

Think about the last time you got down on the floor. Maybe to play with a grandchild, look for something under the couch, or tend a garden bed. Now think about getting back up. That small moment says a lot about daily independence, and it is a big focus in CrossFit for seniors in Austin.

This post is for people over 60 who want to stay capable, and for adult kids who are searching on behalf of a parent. Getting up from the floor is a skill. Skills can be practiced.

Why This Skill Matters

Getting up from the floor uses your legs, hips, core and balance all at once. You do it in daily life more than you realize, from picking things up to getting out of low seats.

When people stop practicing it, it gets harder to do. They start avoiding the floor, then avoiding low chairs, then avoiding the garden. Life gets a little smaller.

The good news is that regular practice keeps these movements familiar. You do not need to be an athlete. You need a safe place and a little repetition.

A Simple Drill You Can Try Today

Here is the takeaway. Set up next to a sturdy chair or couch, on a carpeted or padded surface. Start by lowering yourself onto one knee using the chair for support. Pause there for a moment.

From the one knee position, place your hands on the chair seat, press through your front foot and stand up. Switch legs and repeat. Do 3 to 5 each side, slowly, no rushing.

When that feels comfortable, try lowering to the floor and getting up with the chair beside you for help. Over weeks, you may use the chair less. Always move at a pace that feels controlled.

How We Coach It in LIFE

Our LIFE class meets Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 10am, and Caleb coaches it. The class is CrossFit scaled for adults over 60, which means movements are adjusted to the person in front of him.

Caleb pays attention to how each person moves and offers options. Someone might use a box for support, someone else might use a lighter weight, and the next person might move through the same pattern with a bit more range.

The room is friendly. People encourage each other and notice when someone is not there. That connection is a big part of why people stick with it.

For Adult Kids Reading This

If you are looking for something for a parent, notice what they avoid. Do they skip low chairs, the car seat, the garden? That is usually a sign they would enjoy a coached place to practice. A conversation that starts with "Would you like to try a class together?" often goes better than "You should do something."

If you have an injury or a health condition, check with your doctor first and tell your coach. See: The Chair Stand: A Simple Test and Drill for Strength Training for Older Adults

Build It Into Your Week

Practice this drill on the days you do not come to class. Do it once in the morning and once in the evening, and pair it with something you already do, like after brushing your teeth. Habits stick best when they are attached to something familiar.

Track progress simply. Write the date and how many reps felt smooth. Over a month, you will see the numbers climb, and that feeling of progress is a powerful reason to keep going. Share the chart with a family member who is cheering you on.
