Coming Back After Time Off: How To Restart Training The Right Way

Life happens. A work trip turns into two. Someone at home gets sick. The holidays show up and suddenly it has been three weeks since you were in the gym.

The hardest part of a break is not losing fitness. It is walking back through the door. Here is how we coach members coming back after time off, so the first week back sets you up instead of setting you back.

You did not lose everything

A few weeks away feels like a lot, but your body remembers. Jeff Nippard covers this in the video above. Strength and muscle you built before tend to come back faster than it took to build them the first time.

So do not treat it like starting over. You are picking back up.

Go lighter than you think

The most common mistake we see is trying to hit your old numbers on day one. Your muscles may feel ready, but your joints, tendons and lungs need a few sessions to catch up.

  • Use lighter weights for the first week back

  • Scale the reps or the distance in conditioning workouts

  • Pick a pace you could hold for the whole workout

  • Stop a few reps short of failure

You will feel sore after the first couple of classes. That is normal. Keep moving and it fades.

Tell your coach

When you walk in, let the coach know you have been away. That one sentence changes how we scale your workout. We would much rather help you build back up than watch you chase the whiteboard and end up hurt.

Show up, then build

For the first two weeks, the goal is attendance, not intensity. Get to class on the days you planned to. Once showing up feels normal again, start adding weight and pushing the pace.

Consistency is what got you fit in the first place. It is what gets you back.

Eat and sleep like you mean it

Coming back is a great time to clean up the basics. Build your meals around meat and eggs, drink water, salt your food and get to bed on time. Recovery is where the fitness comes back.

Start this week

Pick your class times for this week and put them on the calendar. Walk in, tell your coach, and go lighter than your ego wants. You will be back to your old self sooner than you think.
